Holly Oatmeal
By Stephanie Zonis
Take it from me; this is not your grandmother’s oatmeal. And it’s certainly not that overly-sweet, instant mush you ate as a kid. This is actually a multi-grain hot cereal with lots of texture from rye, flaxseeds, barley, quinoa, and (of course) oats, among other grains. Prepared with soy milk or regular milk, this can be made in the microwave or on your stovetop. The resulting hot cereal has plenty of fiber and a good amount of protein, so it really fills you up. For those trying to get more whole grains into their diet, Holly’s got you covered; one serving of her oatmeal provides at least 38 grams of whole grains (out of a suggested intake of 48 or more grams). Holly’s Oatmeal is fine all by itself, but I like to gild the lily with a little brown sugar or, better still, a spoonful or two of my best Grade B maple syrup---delicious! Pair this cereal with a serving of fruit or juice and perhaps a cup of coffee or tea, and you have a nutritious, hot breakfast that’s a great comfort when you have to face a cold day outside.
Holly’s Oatmeal is offered in multiple flavors, so you won’t always be faced with the same old, same old. I like the Wickedly Plain, but there’s a Cranberry Almond, a Goji Berry, and an Apricot Maple Nut, as well. If you are among the many who can’t or won’t consume gluten, rejoice! Holly, smart woman that she is, has a Plain Porridge and a Cranberry Oatmeal, both gluten-free, so you can indulge in these luxuriant breakfast grains along with everyone else. Where can you find this Rolls Royce among hot cereals? There’s an incomplete list of retail outlets on the website, but Holly’s Oatmeal is also available via online ordering, on the website itself or at Amazon.com.
